ARLINGTON, Texas -- Robinson Cano is no stranger to playing in September games that matter. Cano is having quite an impact in his first stretch run with wild card-contending Seattle, with his first four-RBI game for the Mariners putting them up big early on the way to a 10-2 win over the Texas Rangers on Thursday night. "This is a game that really mattered for us. If we want to stay in the race, weve got to start early," Cano said. "When theyre out of the race, you dont want to play around with them." The Mariners, coming off consecutive one-run wins at AL wild card leader Oakland, stayed a half-game behind Detroit for the second wild card. Detroit won 11-4 in 11 innings at Cleveland. "I thought it was important that they came out with a lot of energy, a lot of focus, and played up to their ability and not get caught up in a lot of different things," Seattle manager Lloyd McClendon said. While long a forgone conclusion, the Rangers (53-87) became the first team in the majors eliminated from playoff contention after their sixth loss in a row. They went to their second consecutive World Series only three years ago. Rookie left-hander Roenis Elias (10-12) allowed a run in five innings to become the fourth Seattle starter with at least 10 wins. Cano had a two-run single in Seattles six-run outburst in the second against Robbie Ross (2-6), all with two outs. Canos two-out double an inning later, the first extra-base hit for the Mariners, drove in two more to make it 9-0. In the first season of his $240 million, 10-year deal after leaving the Yankees in free agency, Cano is hitting .322 with 32 doubles, 13 home runs and 75 RBIs through 134 games. He had 23 games with at least four RBIs during his nine seasons in New York, and his career high is six. Texas used six pitchers, including two more making their big league debuts to increase the Rangers major league record totals to 40 pitchers used and 63 players overall this season. Chris Denorfia homered in the seventh, his first in 20 games with the Mariners since being acquired from San Diego at the end of July. After throwing five no-hit innings in his previous start Saturday at Houston, Ross allowed an infield single to Austin Jackson leading off the game. But the Mariners didnt score in the first, and the first two batters were out in the second before seven in a row reached to chase Ross. "He just couldnt execute a pitch to get out of that inning," Rangers manager Ron Washington said. "He just couldnt command the baseball." FOUR TIMES 10 It is the first time since 2003 that the Mariners have had at least four 10-game winners. Elias joined Felix Hernandez, Hisashi Iwakuma and Chris Young this season. Kansas City and the Los Angeles Angels are the only other American League teams with four 10-game winners. BIT OF A HIGH PITCH Texas RHP Lisalverto Bonilla is sure to remember his first major league pitch, one home plate umpire Vic Carapazza would rather forget. Bonillas first pitch bounced well in front of the plate and hit the ump in -- well, a rather delicate spot. Carapazza took a few minutes to gather himself before the game resumed. That was to start the sixth, two innings after Spencer Patton also made his big league debut for the Rangers. TRAINERS ROOM Mariners: McClendon said Young (12-7) will start Saturday night as scheduled. "The ball came out good. Hes healthy," McClendon said Thursday, a day after Youngs regular bullpen session. There were questions about Youngs health, and possible fatigue, after he gave up eight runs and 11 hits in 4 1-3 innings his last two starts. Rangers: Yu Darvish, who hasnt pitched since Aug. 9 because of right elbow inflammation, was evaluated by team physician Dr. Keith Meister. The Rangers expect to have a report on their ace Friday. With only 3 1/2 weeks left, it is likely Darvish will not start another game this season. ... C Robinson Chirinos (stiff neck), who missed his fourth game in a row, and RHP Miles Mikolas (right shoulder) both got injections. Chirinos is day to day and Mikolas will begin a throwing program when his symptoms dissipate. UP NEXT Iwakuma (13-6), who is 8-2 with a 2.35 ERA in his last 12 starts, starts for the Mariners in the second game of the four-game set. Rangers scheduled starter Scott Baker (3-3) has won his last three appearances (first in relief and then two starts) after pitching in losses in each of his first 20 outings for Texas. A. J. TORONTO RAPTORS AND THE PLAYOFFS: After watching the Brooklyn Nets and Miami Heat game Tuesday night and once again witnessing the Nets beat the Heat, Im convinced that the best course of action for the Raptors will be for them to make sure they do everything in their power to secure the third seed in the Eastern Conference and the Atlantic Division title. I want no part of the other current bracket (Heat/Nets/Chicago Bulls). Ill take my chances with the Washington Wizards or Charlotte Bobcats in the first round, though, either of those match-ups isnt a walk in the park, either. If you can win a series, and that wont be easy, and the current standings hold form, I feel confident that the Raptors could play a very competitive series against the Indiana Pacers. Im not saying they would win that series - the defence has to really improve down the stretch here and get back to early-mid-January form - but it would be quite compelling. There are five games left. Win all of your games and you write your own ticket. Stumble and the help will have to come from others and thats never a position you want to be in. 2. JOE DUMARS (Pistons): Rumours are swirling that hes going to step down as the teams president and GM and Im not a bit surprised. Too many coaching firings and going all-in on guys like Ben Gordon, Charlie Villaneuva, Josh Smith and Brandon Jennings sealed his fate in Motown. He had a terrific run in the early 2000s as the elite team in the Eastern Conference, but you see it often with coaches and GMs - you lose your fastball and get stale in your approach/creativity and you lose your way. Hes a good basketball man and some time away will reinvigorate him and Im sure hell be back at it again down the line. 3. MIKE DANTONI (Lakers): Watching some of his recent games, he looks like a beaten man and someone who knows that his fate is sealed in LA. DAntoni is an outstanding offensive coach who has had to deal with numerous injjuries and drama there.dddddddddddd At the end of the day, its a results-oriented business and when you evaluate his run in Denver, New York and LA, it doesnt look good. On the other hand, his teams in Phoenix - thanks in large part to Bryan Colangelos personnel moves - were awesome and entertaining to watch. Does he get another shot? Im not sure, but I do know that hes very capable if you give him a solid roster. If it ends there, I think hell be heard from again, at least as an assistant coach for a head coach looking for a guy who can upgrade his offence. Hed be a guy to talk to if hed consider being in that role. 4. INDIANA PACERS: Heard coach Frank Vogels interview where he said that being the top seed in the East was the "goal", but the "priority" is to be playing well down the stretch and be healthy/sharp heading into the playoffs. Well, what a change in approach. Theyve been obsessed with being the top seed since training camp. Now its about trying to rebuild your teams collective psyche, which wont be easy, but is doable. The talent is there to win the East, but the chemistry is off-kilter and Roy Hibbert needs a reality check. He is a defensive player who can block shots and rebound on both ends. Do what you do well, thats your strength, and play to it. Hes a quatenary or quinary offensive option in the grand scheme of things when hes on the floor. If they get him to buy into that, theyll be fine. Paul George and David West must have the ball in their hands a majority of the time, plain and simple. 5. STEVE NASH (Lakers): Congrats on becoming number-three on the NBAs all-time assists list last night. I watched the game versus the Houston Rockets and felt for him playing injured and in pain. Its ice to see him out there, though. What a career. Hell be a Hall of Famer. Itll be interesting to see if hes back next year for the Lakers for the final year of his contract, but its been a great run either way.
